Charles A. Dargan papers, 1846 Feb. 20-June 3.

Correspondence to Dargan while a student at Wake Forest College, Forestville, N.C.; letter, 20 Feb. 1846, Darlington, S.C., A.B. Charles, to "Dear Maples," re planning his trip to college accompanied by the parson, who will visit to "find out whither you keep a stray bottle of the good old stuff in your trunk or not," and explaining that he expected to arrive too late to join the freshman class. Letter, 3 June 1846, Mt. Zion School (Darlington, S.C., postmarked Society Hill), from Cousin Rose, re her pupils, events at school, social life, advice on securing an education, and preparations for the 4th of July celebration, "Mr. Culpepper is to deliver an address at my school room on the 4th - & I suppose Mr. John J. McIver will be the reader of the Declaration [of Independence].... we are anticipating a celebration, notwithstanding that there is to be such a wonderful parade at the village this year. The people of this place are quite in the spirit of a commemoration of Liberty's birthday. They expect to give a dinner that will be an honour to themselves so they say. If they contribute as generously as they did on May Day, it will be an honour to them sure enough."
